Alcohol Awareness Month – MINUTE FIT TIP

The month of April is known for Alcohol Awareness and it’s my intent to help bring some healthy alternatives to mind that one can implement into his/her lifestyle. Being a social drinker and also a regular exerciser can co-exist if one does not exceed moderate levels of beer, wine, or liquor. The average amount of drinks per sitting for an adult male (without it to be considered binge drinking) is four standard drinks, and three standard drinks for females. A great way to keep your calories low is with alternatives, like non-alcoholic beverages, club soda, or sparkling juices. Lower calorie beers can also be an option; Beck’s Premier Light, Miller 64, Amstel Light, Anheuser-Busch Light Pale Lager, Michelob Ultra, Natural Light, Miller Lite, Heineken Light, and Corona Light are all under 100 calories!
Other alternatives to drinking alcohol to relax and help relieve stress could include jogging, swimming, walking, running, bicycling, dancing, basketball, racquet sports, or lawn and garden work. These activities provide tremendous benefits to the human body’s ability to reduce the production of cortisol, adrenaline, and other stress-generating hormones. This kind of aerobic exercise can increase the output of “feel-good” endorphins. A slight change in lifestyle can help people avoid heavy-drinking behaviors and make the switch to a balanced journey in well-being.
Obviously, any change in our lives can be difficult, so a great way to start if you’re struggling with moderating alcohol is to take small steps. Simply maintaining an alcohol-free home, avoiding situations where binge drinking is the norm, and setting a limit on consumption before engaging in drinking can all help to stick to your goals.
Remember, if alcohol is your choice, make a consensus effort to be aware of what you’re getting into. If you are trying to implement some change into your lifestyle other than drinking regularly, give exercise a try, spend more time with family and friends, or try a new hobby.
